Here in the UK – This would be breaching Data Protection Act 2003. IF this was to happen, webmasters would require by law to apply for a licence holding customers personal details. Which if this was to happen would be in public display, lets not forget Google crawls anything so it will show up.
Then you would have to get legal into this by providing privacy terms etc. I’d rather this not to happen. I prefer this option if you click here, much cleaner too. http://userproplugin.com/userpro/forums/topic/display-name-option-for-profile-permalink-structure/
Kieran,
The privacy law is something that I have definitely considered. The truth of the matter with my site is that I am using as a means for individual stylists to advertise for themselves without being affiliated with the salon they are currently working at. It is a voluntary registration and in this case the purpose is to allow the users a venue to advertise, not unlike the local business listings. Again, this is voluntary and I am merely providing the venue to the users and this is outlined in my privacy policy.
In any instance, the issue has been resolved. It was a case of me not using the display name and the profile instead reaching for the username as pointed out by Central Geek.
Thank you so much for the assistance.
Hi @Stylisting,
I think that is a wise choice. With the upcoming new feature of being able to use the Display Name in the permalink structure, the Display Name gives flexibility. And knowing a great many stylists myself, that will appeal to them, I am sure. The stylists I know, love flexibility.
One thing I hope you remember when I or someone else responds, when there is opposition to an idea, it usually isn’t without good reason. There are a few of us who are aware that when we respond, we aren’t just responding to you. We are responding to anyone who might be reading the thread and wondering why there would be opposition to the particular idea. Myself, I like to give reason for my opposition so that those reading understand that it isn’t just my not wanting something. I try to use care when pointing out my reasons. Sometimes it makes a difference and sometimes it doesn’t. But I would be remiss if I didn’t give those reasons. So, it’s not a personal thing.
I do believe that it would be a mistake to ask the developer to include a feature that would very likely get someone in a tight spot. So, I am very happy that you have chosen to go with the Display Name. I think it will serve you quite well. And I think the stylists will love you for it. 🙂
Central Geek,
I agree completely. I do understand that privacy is extremely important, that is my day job. Just for this one case of my site I knew that there would be some trade offs for it to be offered. I do greatly appreciate both your and Kieran’s suggestions, the privacy policy on my site was added after Kieran brought up the subject. Also I do not think that changing the plugin would have been the right path. I knew it was something I had/had not done and was just stuck, but thanks to you two that issue is in the past.
Thanks again for the support, I really do appreciate the help.
