However, if my users have a hyphen (-) or space in their last name, then their profile cannot be accessed via that permalink structure. Two examples:
First name: Liz
Last name: O’Connell-Thompson

and

First name: John
Last name: Del Cristo

I can’t access their profile using that permalink because of the hyphen (-) or space in their last name. Is there a way to do so?

There’s no way to avoid that, as space is already converted to dash, so dash is read as a space. 🙂
