I suppose this is to prevent duplicate user names (is there no duplicate checking?)

Anyhow, a number of people have complained about it and I was wondering how it works and if there is a way to turn it off?

Seems that you are facing Duplicate pages issue . Can you please go to UserPro Settings – Click on Tab – Setup Pages and see – is this a case with every UserPro page like members , login , logout etc ?

The usernames without a number at the end you see on that page is because the user edited their display name.

I don’t see anything unusual on the Setup Pages screen, but here is a screenshot of it http://nimb.ws/RDT6mv

It isn’t happening to the pages, it just seems that when a user creates a new account, those numbers get appended to the end of their name.

I’m not sure if it is happening only during a manual (old-fashioned style account) creation by a user, or how it also occurs when account creation happens via social network login.

Yes I can see the problem , I checked your site and created my account on your site with name nishtha and number 16 automatically got appended to my Profile Display Name.
But this seems to be some conflicting issue with other plugins or theme installed in your WordPress Site . Can you please try disabling the plugins one by one and switch to default theme and see if anyone of them is causing the issues and let me know .

If it still doesn’t work please raise the ticket on support , share the login details of your site and refer to this forum thread in ticket .

Also I would need permission to temporarily change the theme and disable the plugins on your site to investigate the issue .
