When I choose smaller images, it will work. What is the maximum resolution that these images can have? Or what re the dimensions, size and format they should have?

Probably that is because your server limits (memory, etc) or because the image is extra large.
You can use some free plugins to optimize and limit images (Imsanity, WP Smush.it, etc).
Is it working fine if you deactivate Userpro and try uploading the image from WP media management?
Try to narrow the issue.
