I added custom background field to primary blog but when logged in as a multisite user on the the user’s blog custom background field is not present.
This would be of no use if you can’t globally update fields across the entire multisite…. What am I missing.

Thanks

What you are expecting is not default WordPress behavior. It is something I have been hoping that UserPro would give the option for, but strictly speaking, what you are asking for is not consistent with normal WordPress behavior.

The way that UserPro is set up, it is possible because of the way UserPro stores user files. But in order for what you want to occur, the author would have to give an option to globally enable the user links or to remain as WordPress is designed and have the links reflect the current site.

Given the fact that not many developers truly understand the way that Multisite works, you can’t expect something outside what WordPress offers by default.

The way Multisite is configured, even though it would appear to be straight forward for showing globally, a developer has to overcome the WordPress URLs. Those URLs are written as though each site is separate. So, for a subdomain install they would be reflected as subsite.mainsite.com/profile/ or subsite.mainsite.com/profile/user/

With a subdirectory subsites install it would look something like this mainsite.com/subsite/profile/ or mainsite.com/subsite/profile/user/. In the case of showing images, the same structure is used, subsite.mainsite.com/wp-content/uploads/userpro/user/image.jpg or in subdirectory configuration mainsite.com/subsite/wp-content/uploads/user/image.jpg – This causes a problem with seeing globally because of this structure, as best I can describe it. In order for things to show globally, the subsite would have to be removed from the URL for WordPress to allow network viewing of the image. So, in order to show images from the UserPro folder of a user across the network, the URL would have to look something like this regardless of whether it is on a subsite or on the main site.. mainsite.com/wp-content/uploads/userpro/user (which is reflected by a number for the storage folder)/image.jpg

The way it is, for subsites the subsite is always included by WordPress in the URL of any stored folder. And because of that, it stops the showing of images across the network, unless the store folder is looked at from the network point of view. If as I have suggested in the past, UserPro always looks at the network view, it is possible to see across the network. But, to my knowledge, Ahmed hasn’t been left alone long enough to tackle Multisite issues. Too many people are wanting their special interests to happen like “Yesterday”.

So, there may be some time before this is addressed.. Please remember, Multisite is a complex configuration and isn’t easy to work with.. because it is all manipulation of database tables and basically what would be called in the entertainment business “smoke and mirrors”..

The interesting part of it all is, the storage folder is in the same place always. It’s just the way WordPress processes things.. I hope this sheds some light on this subject. 🙂

I will update as soon as I have something to say.

Do you need a profile page for members on each site?

There is an import export feature of UserPro. But I would like to know why user profiles need to be network wide.

Will wait for further progress regarding multisite issues.

Thanks

I have done some preliminary tests.. With regard to the background image field, is this field present in the right hand fields to be able to drag it to the edit profile group? If not, just go into the Custom Fields and click “Add New Field”. Name it “Profile Background” then choose (I believe) “Photo Upload” ( I can’t replicate the missing Profile Background, so I don’t know if Photo Upload is correct. It could be “File Upload”.. so if the first doesn’t work, try the second..

Anyway, then you can enter the help text if you are using that. Otherwise, go down to “Or select/sync an existing meta field key” and choose from the dropdown “custom_profile_bg”. Then click publish. The field should show on the right site and you can drag it to the location in the field group “Edit Profile Fields”. Then save that. From that point on, that field should update network wide.. Ahmed is way ahead of me on this one.. Like I said, I haven’t been able to test in a few days. And I don’t network activate for my applications. I am testing that because of this and another issue in the forums.

With any custom fields you have created, you will have to follow the same process. Find the field you created in the dropdown “Or select/sync an existing meta field key”, name it use the type of field and publish it.

The reason I am saying use this process is I think I see a problem with importing fields.. I don’t want to tell you to do that because of what I had happen when I just did it.. I will report this to Ahmed.

At any rate, for each field you sync with, they will (or should) update as you update them on any subsite. I have tested that part. I can enter content on any field from any site, main or subsite, and I can go to the other sites, refresh the page and the content shows up.. If this doesn’t happen for you, I may need access to your site to see what is happening.. But before that, if things are not working, try going to Settings > Permalinks and re-save the permalinks. That is one of the first things others on the internet advise before opening support tickets.. But that shouldn’t be a problem with this situation.. However, if the fields aren’t updating, try that and report back.. Thanks 🙂

The mini profile I’m using just so the can be searched on the primary blog with a link that takes the search to their multisite. That’s my reason for multisite wide.

Is there any plans for file attachments for download?
